Already signed up? How to add a Wealthsimple referral code

Lots of people download the Wealthsimple app, sign up, and only later hear about the referral bonus. The good news is that Wealthsimple gives new clients a short grace period to attach a referral code after the fact. The bad news is that the window is short and easy to miss. This guide explains exactly how to add a code, how the timing works, and what to do if the option is not showing.

How to add a referral code after signup

1. Make sure the Wealthsimple app is updated to the latest version.
2. Sign in and open your profile, then find the Rewards Centre (sometimes shown as Rewards or Invite friends).
3. Look for the option to enter an invite or referral code.
4. Type LUML7A exactly as shown, in capital letters, and confirm.
5. Check that your account has $100 or more from outside Wealthsimple, funded within 30 days of opening.
6. Open a Wealthsimple Chequing account if you don't have one, since the bonus is paid there.

How the 7-day window works

According to the official referral terms, the window to add a code is 7 days after your first funding, at the time of last verification. That means the timer starts when money first lands in your Wealthsimple account, not when you created your login. If you signed up weeks ago but have not deposited anything yet, you may still have time: add the code first, then fund your account.

If you already funded your account, count the days from when that first deposit or transfer was completed. Bank deposits usually show a date in your activity feed. If you're on day six or seven, add the code right away.

What if the option is missing?

The add-code option normally disappears for one of four reasons:

• The 7-day window after first funding has passed.
• A referral code is already attached to your account.
• You had a Wealthsimple Trade, Crypto, Managed or Chequing account before, so you're not a new client. (A Wealthsimple Tax account alone does not count.)
• Your app is out of date or the menu has moved in a newer version.

Wealthsimple's own help article on how to confirm your referral is the best place to check the current menu path. If you believe you are still within the window and the option is missing, contact Wealthsimple support through the app and explain when you first funded.

The other rules still apply

Adding a code late does not relax any other requirement. To receive the $25 bonus you still need to deposit $100 or more from outside Wealthsimple within 30 days of opening your account. Transfers from other Wealthsimple users, Wealthsimple credits, and deposits from Wealthsimple affiliates don't count. The bonus is paid to your Chequing account, and if you don't open one within 90 days, the bonus is forfeited. Once it arrives, keep it in your account for 180 days.

On joint accounts, RESPs and spousal RRSPs, only the primary holder can register a referral. And remember that cross-referrals aren't allowed: if someone referred you, you can't refer them back.

If the window has already closed

If more than 7 days have passed since your first funding, Wealthsimple generally cannot add a referral code, and this site cannot either. There is no workaround, and opening a second account to try again is against the terms. The best thing you can do is share your own referral link with friends who haven't joined yet, since you'll earn a reward when they qualify.
